This finely cast gilt copper alloy sculpture, gilded with 24 karat gold, represents White Tara (Sitatara), the goddess of compassion, healing, and longevity in Vajrayana Buddhism, depicted here in her serene and meditative form.
Seated in vajra posture, White Tara displays her characteristic gesture of teaching with the right hand, while the left hand is held in a gesture of compassion. She is adorned with elaborate jewelry and crowned as a fully enlightened bodhisattva.
Her distinctive iconography is marked by the presence of seven eyes—one on the forehead, two on the palms, and two on the soles of the feet—symbolizing her all-seeing compassion and vigilance over the suffering of all beings.
Lotus stems rise gracefully at her shoulders, supporting fully blossomed flowers, reinforcing her association with purity and spiritual awakening.
Show MoreThe surface retains a rich, warm gilding, with areas of natural wear revealing the underlying copper, enhancing depth and visual character. The figure is further enriched by delicate inlays of colored stones, adding refinement and visual contrast.
Executed in the traditional Himalayan style, this sculpture reflects the exceptional craftsmanship and iconographic precision of Newar artisans, while evoking the refined aesthetic of older devotional works.
