This finely cast gilt copper alloy sculpture, gilded with 24 karat gold, represents Amitabha Buddha, the Buddha of Infinite Light, one of the central figures of Mahayana Buddhism.
Seated in vajra posture, Amitabha is depicted in dhyana mudra, the gesture of meditation, with both hands resting in his lap holding a bowl. This posture symbolizes deep concentration, inner stillness, and the attainment of enlightened awareness.
Amitabha is associated with the Western Pure Land, a realm of peace and spiritual awakening, where beings may be reborn through devotion and ultimately attain enlightenment.
The figure is rendered with refined modeling, featuring a serene expression, softly defined facial features, and harmonious proportions. The monastic robe is elegantly draped over the shoulder, in accordance with classical representations of the Buddha.
Show MoreThe surface retains a rich and luminous gilding, with areas of natural wear revealing the copper beneath, enhancing depth and visual character. The subtle patina contributes to the antique-style appearance of the sculpture.
Executed in the traditional Himalayan style, this piece reflects the craftsmanship and iconographic precision of Newar artisans while evoking the refined aesthetic of older devotional works.
