This finely cast gilt copper alloy sculpture, gilded with 24-karat gold, represents Saraswati, the goddess of wisdom, knowledge, music, and the arts, revered in both Hindu and Buddhist traditions.
Depicted here with four arms, Saraswati embodies the harmonious union of intellectual clarity and artistic expression. She plays the vina, the classical Indian string instrument, symbolizing mastery of sound, rhythm, and sacred knowledge. One of her hands holds a mala (rosary), representing meditation and spiritual discipline, while another holds a manuscript or sacred text, evoking learning and transmission of knowledge.
She is seated in a graceful posture upon a lotus base, accompanied by her vahana, the swan, visible at her feet. The swan symbolizes discernment (viveka), the ability to distinguish truth from illusion — a central attribute of Saraswati.
Show MoreThe figure is richly adorned with an elaborate crown, delicate jewelry, and finely detailed garments. The face is serene and introspective, with softly modeled features expressing calm intelligence and inner harmony.
The gilded surface retains a warm and luminous patina, with areas of natural wear revealing the copper alloy beneath, enhancing depth and authenticity. Subtle inlaid stones enrich the ornamentation.
Executed in the traditional Himalayan style, this sculpture reflects the refined craftsmanship of Newar artisans from the Kathmandu Valley, where Hindu and Buddhist artistic traditions have coexisted and influenced one another for centuries.
