This finely cast gilt copper alloy sculpture, richly gilded with 24 karat gold, represents the Medicine Buddha (Bhaisajyaguru), the Buddha of healing and spiritual medicine in Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism.
Seated in vajra posture, the Buddha holds a healing plant (myrobalan) in his right hand, while his left hand rests in his lap holding a bowl, symbolizing the transmission of healing and the alleviation of suffering.
The serene expression, downcast eyes, and harmonious proportions convey a sense of calm, balance, and meditative presence.
The robe, delicately draped over the left shoulder, is finely detailed, reflecting the refined aesthetic of traditional Himalayan sculpture.
Show MoreThe surface retains a warm and luminous gilding, with areas of natural wear revealing the copper beneath, enhancing the depth and character of the piece. The subtle patina contributes to its antique-style appearance.
Executed in the traditional Himalayan style, this sculpture reflects the craftsmanship and iconographic precision of Newar artisans, while evoking the aesthetic of older devotional works.
