Tara, whose name in Sanskrit means “star”, is one of the most revered figures in Buddhism.
She embodies the feminine aspect of Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, and, according to tradition, was born from his tears of mercy. In Buddhist practice, Tara is invoked as a meditation deity to cultivate compassion, kindness, and unconditional love.
Among her many manifestations, the most venerated are Green Tara and White Tara.
The green color of Green Tara symbolizes enlightened activity — a blend of white, yellow, and blue, representing the powers of pacifying, increasing, and removing obstacles, for the protection of all beings.

In this depiction, Tara sits in royal posture, with her left leg folded in meditation and her right leg extended, ready to rise and assist those who call upon her.
Her right hand is open in the gesture of generosity and protection (varada mudrā), while her left hand holds the stem of a lotus — a symbol of purity blooming in the midst of the world.
A beloved figure across Nepal and Tibet, Green Tara represents the immediate and compassionate response of awakened wisdom to the suffering of all beings.
The green color of Green Tara is symbolic in itself. It is a blend of white, yellow, and blue colors representing the actions of pacifying, increasing, and destroying obstacles, for the protection of all beings. Green embodies enlightened activity, the dynamic expression of wisdom and compassion in action.
