Tara, whose name in Sanskrit means “star”, is one of Buddhism’s most revered female figures. She embodies the feminine aspect of Avalokiteśvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, and, according to legend, arose from his tears. In Buddhist practice, Tara is invoked to cultivate compassion, kindness, and unconditional love.
Among her many manifestations, Green Tara (Śyāmatārā) represents compassion in action — the immediate response to the suffering of all beings. Her right leg extended signifies readiness to rise and offer help. Her hands, joined before her heart in the Dharmachakra mudrā, express the Turning of the Wheel of Dharma — the transmission of wisdom and the continuity of awakening.
Show MoreHer green hue unites white, yellow, and blue — the enlightened activities of pacifying, enriching, and removing obstacles — a dynamic harmony of wisdom and compassion. Handcrafted in Patan, Nepal, this 24 K gold-gilded bronze (37 cm, 2.585 kg) exemplifies the delicacy of Newar artistry.
