This statue depicts the historical Buddha, Śākyamuni, at the moment of his Enlightenment beneath the Bodhi tree in Bodhgayā, northern India.
His right hand touches the ground — the “earth-touching” gesture (Bhūmisparśa mudrā) — calling the Earth to witness the truth of his awakening and the merit of his past actions.
Seated in meditation, his left hand rests upon his knee, palm upward, in a state of deep inner calm and concentration.
The absence of a lotus throne enhances the austerity and spiritual purity of the composition, focusing on the essence of realization itself.
Handcrafted in Patan, Nepal, this 24 K gold-gilded bronze statue exemplifies the refined grace and symbolic precision of Newar craftsmanship, rooted in centuries of Buddhist tradition.
