Amitābha, whose name means “Infinite Light”, is one of the Five Wisdom Buddhas in Mahāyāna and Vajrayāna Buddhism.
He presides over the Western Paradise of Sukhāvatī, the “Pure Land of Bliss,” where he welcomes beings and guides them toward enlightenment.
He is depicted seated in meditation, with both hands in the dhyāna-mudrā — the gesture of contemplation — often holding a begging bowl, a symbol of wisdom and purity.
His tranquil face and perfectly balanced posture express the deep serenity that arises from inner awakening.
In the Newar Buddhist tradition of Nepal, Amitābha embodies ultimate compassion: his infinite radiance dispels ignorance and leads sentient beings to liberation.
