Tara (which in sanskrit means a “star”) is one of the most important figures in Buddhism. She is a representation of the female aspect of Avalokiteshvara, the Buddha of Compassion and according to some versions would have been born from his own tears. She is used as a meditation deity by practitioners for developing some qualities such as compassion, kindness and love.
