This finely cast gilt copper alloy sculpture, gilded with 24 karat gold, represents Shakyamuni Buddha, the historical Buddha, depicted here in dharmachakra mudra, the gesture of teaching.
Seated in vajra posture, the Buddha brings his hands before the chest in a symbolic gesture representing the turning of the Wheel of Dharma, marking the transmission of his teachings. This iconography refers to his first sermon at Sarnath, one of the most significant moments in Buddhist tradition.
The figure displays refined modeling, with a serene expression and softly defined features conveying inner calm and spiritual authority. The elegantly draped monastic robe and the balanced proportions reflect the classical aesthetic of Himalayan sculpture.
Show MoreThe surface retains a warm gilding, with areas of natural wear revealing the underlying copper, enhancing depth and visual richness. The subtle patina contributes to the antique-style appearance of the piece.
Executed in the traditional Himalayan style, this sculpture reflects the craftsmanship and iconographic precision of Newar artisans while evoking the refined character of older devotional works.
