This striking gilt copper alloy sculpture, gilded with 24-karat gold, represents an animal-headed dakini associated with the wrathful deities encountered in the Bardo, the intermediate state described in Tibetan Buddhist tradition.
Depicted in a dynamic dancing posture, the figure embodies the fierce and transformative energies that arise between death and rebirth. The feline head, both expressive and powerful, symbolizes instinctual awareness and the raw forces of the mind encountered in visionary states.
The dakini is adorned with a garland of skulls, symbolizing impermanence and the transcendence of ego. In one hand, she holds a small human figure, a potent symbol of the transformation of the self and the illusory nature of individual identity.
Show MoreA flayed human skin is draped over her back, with the head clearly visible — a striking tantric attribute expressing the transcendence of the physical body and the illusion of self.
Such figures are well known in thangka painting, particularly in representations of the wrathful deities of the Bardo, but remain extremely rare as individual sculptures.
