This piece is a reproduction inspired by the celebrated torana of Yetakha Bāhā Temple in the Kathmandu Valley, dating from the 10th–11th centuries.
At the center, the Buddha is depicted teaching, surrounded by seated figures turned toward him in attentive listening. The composition is framed by two makaras and crowned by a kīrtimukha, a leonine face whose gaping mouth releases serpents that extend to the jaws of the makaras.
The original torana of Yetakha Bāhā is among the 108 masterpieces selected by the Rubin Museum of Art for its publication Himalayan Art in 108 Objects.
