Saraswati is the goddess of art, knowledge, learning, wisdom, and music.
She is often depicted playing the vina, a classical Indian instrument adorned with the head of a swan. The swan, symbolizing wisdom and spiritual perfection, is also her sacred vehicle.
As a water deity, Saraswati is associated with the holy river that bears her name.
In Nepal, she is revered by both Hindus and Buddhists. Her main festival, Saraswati Puja (also known as Basant Panchami) is celebrated in the month of Magh (January–February). On this day, devotees, especially students, offer flowers, fruits, and prayers at her temples, placing books and instruments at her feet for blessings. Many temples and shrines dedicated to Saraswati, such as the one at Swayambhunath, become crowded with worshippers seeking wisdom and inspiration for the year ahead.
