Maitreya, whose name means “The Loving One” or “The Benevolent One”, is regarded in Buddhist tradition as the Buddha of the Future.
A symbol of hope and spiritual renewal, Maitreya represents the promise of future wisdom and universal compassion.
In this depiction, he performs the Dharmachakra mudra, literally “the gesture of setting the Wheel of Dharma in motion.” This sacred gesture recalls the Buddha’s first teaching at Sarnath, where he revealed the Four Noble Truths.
Both hands are raised before the chest, with thumbs and index fingers forming two circles — symbols of the Teaching Wheel and the union of wisdom and method.
The serene face, meditative gaze, and balanced posture express inner peace and the harmony between compassion and knowledge.
In Himalayan art, Maitreya is often portrayed seated on a lion throne or standing in a teaching attitude, embodying the timeless transmission of spiritual insight.
Created according to the classical Newar artistic canon of the Kathmandu Valley, this statue reflects a lineage of exceptional craftsmanship. The finely sculpted drapery, refined expression, and graceful posture reveal both artistic mastery and profound spiritual inspiration.
