Wood: magnolia champaca
This magnificent Basundhara Mandala, devoted to the goddess of prosperity and abundance, is a masterpiece of Newar woodcarving, entirely hand-carved from magnolia champaca wood by a master woodcarver of Bungmati, Nepal.
Basundhara – “the Earth Supporter” – is revered in Tantric Buddhism as the dispenser of both material and spiritual wealth. She is often depicted with six hands, holding symbols of generosity and fertility.
The mandala, a sacred geometric form, represents the cosmic order centered on the deity. Every detail — lotus petals, circular borders, floral motifs — draws the eye toward the heart of the composition, where Basundhara’s divine energy resides. The refined carving and deep relief reflect centuries of artistic tradition preserved within the Kathmandu Valley.
Show MoreThe Makara stand, depicting the mythical sea creature half-crocodile, half-elephant, adds a remarkable sculptural presence. In Himalayan iconography, the makara guards the waters and hidden treasures of the earth. Here it supports the mandala, symbolically bearing the abundance of the world.
Unique and profoundly symbolic, this Basundhara Mandala unites spirituality and master craftsmanship — an homage to both inner wealth and the artistic brilliance of Nepal.
